'Charming' tiny village on the edge of Merseyside where 'dogs are treated like humans' The Botanical gardens. The village, which is historically within the confined of Lancashire and is home to red rose stickers showing the historic pride of Lancashire DNA running through the area. Found in north Southport, the village is quaint with a romantic blend of past and present. Despite it clearly being in the 21st century, you could easily be mistaken for thinking you had time travelled as you look around at the thatched roofs and 150-year-old stockings. Adjacent to the wall of St Cuthbert's Church nestled in the corner of the village, stocks dating from 1741 can be found behind a padlocked gate. Written on a plaque that had been gifted to the people of Churchtown by North Meols Civic Society, it explains the stocks were last used on June 3 1861 when John Rimmer was sentenced to six hours for drunkenness. Nowadays, it's a clear representation of history we shouldn't forget in a hurry, preserved for residents in 2024 to learn, marvel and wonder about the history of their village. Speaking about type of shops and businesses in the area, Jill Skelton of Vintage Home told LancsLive last month: "It's nice, there's lots of independent shops and it's sort of kept it's charm really, from what it used to be. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema opposed the nomination, thwarting their hopes of locking in a majority at the federal agency for the first two years of President-elect Donald Trump's term. A vote to move ahead with the nomination of Lauren McFarren, who currently chairs the NLRB, failed 49-50. Had she been confirmed to another five-year term, it would have cemented a Democratic majority on the agency's board for the first two years of the incoming Trump administration. Now, Trump will likely be able to nominate McFarren's replacement. The NLRB oversees labor disputes, supervises union elections and has the power to investigate unfair labor practices . The partisan breakdown of the NLRB’s leadership is fiercely contested by businesses and labor groups, as the majority on the board sets the agenda and determines how readily the agency uses its power to investigate and enforce labor laws. “It is deeply disappointing, a direct attack on working people, and incredibly troubling that this highly qualified nominee — with a proven track record of protecting worker rights — did not have the votes," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement. The rejection of McFarren was yet another blow to Senate Democrats and President Joe Biden from Manchin and Sinema, who served as major brakes — and at times outright obstacles — to much of their legislative agenda the first two years of Biden's term. Manchin left the Democratic Party in May, while Sinema withdrew from the party in 2022. Both chose not to run for another Senate term and will be leaving the Congress in January. He said the LDF achieved a significant victory in the Chelakkara assembly constituency and could increase its vote share in Palakkad segment in the bypolls, the results of which were announced on Saturday. Taking a dig at the opposition front, the CM asked what had happened even after the Congress-led UDF vigorously campaigned that the bypoll would be an evaluation of the state government. Addressing a party programme here, Vijayan said that the UDF made all attempts to wrest the Chelakkara constituency and gave utmost prominence for the constituency during the campaigning. He said the Congress tried to achieve a huge political victory by winning Chelakkara. "Then, what had happened when the results were announced?" Vijayan asked. He also accused the opposition front of joining hands with outfits like SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami to defeat the LDF in the bypolls held to Palakkad and Chelakkara assembly seats and Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland is a top 3 finalist to land a women’s professional outdoor soccer team in 2026. The city now will have to beat Cincinnati and Denver for the honor of becoming the 16th team in the National Women’s Soccer League. “This is incredibly important given where we are in women’s sports,” says Michael Murphy, co-founder and CEO of Cleveland Pro Soccer. “For the city to grab onto to this now, we’re going to be poised to be a beneficiary of this growth in women’s sports.” Murphy sees women’s soccer as the perfect entrée to women’s sports for Cleveland. Because Cleveland lacks a men’s soccer team, the women’s team would be the city’s soccer brand. Cleveland is also vying for the WBNA to return to the city, with a 16th franchise, set for 2028. “I think that the league in looking at Cleveland compared to the competition, and we would be a major American city that could feature women’s soccer,” Murphy said. Cleveland showed well when league representatives came to visit. “They were able to see why this is an incredible stadium site in the heart of our sports and entertainment district,” Murphy said. “We showed really well.” Cleveland Pro Soccer is looking to build a $150 million stadium on 14 acres south of I-90 and Progressive Field, if the league approves the expansion team. The group is asking city, county and state governments to cover $90 million and is looking to purchase the entire campus of the recently closed Notre Dame College in South Euclid to turn it into a soccer training facility. Cleveland Metroparks in September agreed to a $4.2 million deal with the Ohio Department of Transportation to buy the land. The price would be paid by Cleveland Pro Soccer and the Cleveland Metroparks would lease the land to a CSG-related entity to build and operate the stadium. “The stadium will be the only the second stadium, purpose-built for a women’s professional sports team in the world,” noted Gina Kelly, Content Director for Cleveland Pro Soccer. The first is in Kansas City, which opened this year and tomorrow will host the league championship. Cleveland’s “Back the Bid” efforts have already generated 15,100 fans who are interested in season tickets, if Cleveland is named and a stadium built. The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on four Pakistani entities for their alleged involvement in advancing the country's long-range missile programme. "In light of the continuing proliferation threat of Pakistan's long-range missile development, the United States is designating four entities for sanctions pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13382, which targets proliferators of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery," read a statement issued by the State Department.? The move is the latest aimed at targeting Pakistan's long-range missile programme. Earlier, the US listed Chinese and Belarusian entities on charges of supplying equipment and material for Pakistan's long-range missile program. Pakistan at the time dismissed the allegations and questioned the double standards of the US. The entities that the US listed includes Pakistan's National Development Complex. The US claims Pakistan National Development Complex is responsible for Pakistan's ballistic missile program and has worked to acquire items to advance Pakistan's long-range ballistic missile program. The State Department alleged the National Development Complex (NDC), located in Islamabad, Pakistan, has worked to acquire items in furtherance of Pakistan's long-range ballistic missile program - including special vehicle chassis intended to be used as launch support equipment for ballistic missiles and missile testing equipment. "The United States assesses NDC is responsible for Pakistan's development of ballistic missiles, including the SHAHEEN-series ballistic missiles," it claimed. Other entities that were sanctioned are Affiliates International, Akhtar and Sons Private Limited, and Rockside Enterprise. These entities were accused of supplying equipment and missile?applicable items to Pakistan's ballistic missile program, including its long range-missile program. The State Department said these entities were being designated pursuant to E.O. 13382 Section 1(a)(ii) for having engaged, or attempted to engage, in activities or transactions that have materially contributed to, or pose a risk of materially contributing to, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction or their means of delivery (including missiles capable of delivering such weapons), including any efforts to manufacture, acquire, possess, develop, transport, transfer, or use such items, by Pakistan.? The United States will continue to act against proliferation and associated procurement activities of concern, it added. Pakistan's long-range missile program has remained under the US spotlight for years. Islamabad has resisted the pressure and even attempts by Washington to limit the range of missiles. The latest move by the Biden administration comes just weeks before President-elect Trump takes charge of the White House. Hours after the US move, Pakistan reacted sharply to the move, rejecting the decision. "Pakistan considers the US decision to impose sanctions on NDC and three commercial entities as unfortunate and biased. Pakistan's strategic capabilities are meant to defend its sovereignty and preserve peace and stability in South Asia, " read a statement issued by the Foreign Office. It said the latest installment of sanctions defies the objective of peace and security by aiming to accentuate military asymmetries. Such policies have dangerous implications for strategic stability of our region and beyond. "Pakistan's strategic programme is a sacred trust bestowed by 240 million people upon its leadership. The sanctity of this trust, held in the highest esteem across the entire political spectrum, cannot be compromised," the statement said. "We also regret the imposition of sanctions on private commercial entities. Similar listings of commercial entities in the past were based on mere doubts and suspicion without any evidence whatsoever. While claiming strict adherence to non-proliferation norms, licensing requirement for advanced military technology to other countries have been waived off in the past." It further said such double standards and discriminatory practices not only undermine the credibility of non-proliferation regimes but also endanger regional and international peace and security.
